Nicolas Jackson, The Striker Defences Cannot Ignore

A Senegalese forward whose runs in behind decide how high the opposition dare to defend.

Jackson is the reason opposing centre halves spend a match glancing over their shoulder, because the run in behind arrives whether the pass is on or not. He attacks the channel between full back and centre half at full speed, and defenders who hold their line even a moment too long lose him completely. That threat drags a defence backwards, which creates the space everybody else in the team enjoys using.

The finishing is where the arguments start, because a forward who gets into those positions is expected to convert more of them. He misses chances in ways that stick in the memory, then scores one nobody else would have reached. Judging him only on the misses ignores how many of those situations exist purely because of his own running.
