Valentín Barco, The Left Foot Nobody Expects

An Argentine defender who plays with a freedom most players lose by the time they turn twenty.

Barco came out of Boca Juniors with a reputation for doing things nobody else on the pitch would attempt, including standing still on the ball in the middle of a Copa Libertadores knockout tie. That is not showmanship so much as an unusually low sense of danger, and it makes him extremely difficult to press. His left foot delivers crosses and passes that a conventional full back simply would not see.

The defending is the negotiation, because a player this drawn to the ball is not always where a back four needs him to be. Different coaches have used him in several positions, which suggests nobody has fully settled on what he is. Getting the best from him means accepting the risk rather than trying to coach it out.
