João Pedro, The Forward Who Drops In

A Brazilian attacker whose best work happens in the area between the centre halves and the midfield.

João Pedro is not really a target man or a runner in behind, which is precisely what makes him difficult for a defence to allocate. He comes short, receives with a centre half following him, then either turns or lays the ball off and continues his run into the box. Defenders hate the choice he forces, because following him leaves a gap and ignoring him gives him time.

The question every manager faces is where to play him, given he can operate as a centre forward or behind one without complaint. Pushing him too high removes the link play that makes him valuable, dropping him too deep removes the goals. His numbers rarely tell the full story, since much of his contribution is the pass before the pass that gets remembered.
