Wesley Fofana, Defending On The Front Foot

A French centre half who prefers to intercept the pass rather than deal with what follows it.

Fofana defends by moving forward, which is a genuinely different instinct from the one most centre halves are taught. He watches the passer rather than the striker, reads the moment the ball is released, then steps across to take it cleanly before the forward can turn. Defending that way requires real conviction, because being wrong leaves the goalkeeper exposed with nobody in front of him.

The tragedy of his career is how little of it he has actually been able to spend on a pitch. Serious injuries have arrived one after another, each one costing him months and a share of the explosiveness the style depends on. Watching him stay fit for a sustained run would tell everybody far more than any assessment made from the treatment room.
