Marco Palestra, The Full Back Who Dribbles

An Italian wing back who solves problems by running at defenders instead of waiting for a passing option.

Palestra is remarkably hard to dispossess for a defender, which becomes more impressive once you notice how high up the pitch he operates. He receives the ball facing forward, pushes it past the first challenge, then either delivers early or forces the corner. Full backs who take opponents on at that frequency barely exist in English football, where the overlap is usually the whole plan.

The question is a defensive one, because a wing back who spends that much energy going forward still has to recover the same ground going the other way. Premier League wingers will test how quickly he turns and whether he picks the right moment to commit. Watch the opening ten minutes of any match, which is usually when he decides how brave he intends to be.
