Levi Colwill, The Defender Who Steps Into Midfield

An England defender whose most valuable habit is walking the ball forward until the opposition shape breaks.

Colwill does something most defenders avoid, which is take the ball into the space in front of him rather than pass it sideways and wait. He drives forward until a midfielder steps out to meet him, then releases the pass into the gap that midfielder has just abandoned. Doing that repeatedly is how a team beats a low block without needing a moment of individual magic.

The argument about him concerns the defending itself, because carrying the ball forward leaves ground behind you when possession breaks down. He is aggressive in the duel and occasionally too eager to win it early, which is the risk that comes with the personality. Watch how he reacts immediately after losing the ball, because that reaction tells you far more than the tackle count ever will.
