Mike Penders, Belgium's Goalkeeper Of The Future

A young keeper whose career has moved quicker than the position usually permits anyone to move.

Penders became a first team goalkeeper in Belgium at an age when most keepers are still playing reserve football and waiting for a chance. Holding down that shirt in a competitive league takes a temperament that cannot really be coached, because one mistake in goal is public in a way outfield errors never are. Chelsea moved for him on the strength of that, then sent him to France to keep playing rather than sit and watch.

The difficulty is the queue, because Chelsea have collected goalkeepers faster than any club needs to. A young keeper improves by playing, not by training well and travelling with the squad on a Saturday. His development depends almost entirely on whether the loans keep giving him matches or turn into wasted years on somebody else's bench.
