Geovany Quenda, A Winger Learning To Defend

A Portuguese wide player whose creativity arrived years before the defensive side of his game did.

Quenda beats defenders repeatedly and creates chances at a volume that puts him among the most productive wide players Portugal has produced recently. He accelerates sharply from a standing start, protects the ball well for somebody slight, and combines quickly with whoever arrives to support him. Being naturally left footed while playing on either flank makes his first movement genuinely difficult to predict.

The part of his game still under construction is defending, which matters because he has often been asked to play as a wing back. His pressing angles and tackle timing both need work, and referees notice when a young player mistimes challenges. How quickly he learns that side determines whether he plays as a winger or gets trusted in a back five.
