Danny Welbeck, The Forward Who Aged Cleverly

An England forward whose game improved once he stopped relying on the speed that first made his name.

Welbeck spent his early career known for running, then quietly rebuilt himself into a centre forward who thinks the game rather than sprints through it. He drops off to link play, occupies both centre halves without touching the ball, then attacks the near post when the cross finally comes. Forwards who understand where to stand keep playing long after the quick ones have stopped.

The value he brings is hardest to see on television, because much of it involves standing in a place that stops a defender doing something useful. Younger strikers learn more from watching him press than from any session on a training pitch. What he cannot do is play every match, which makes choosing the right ones the real skill now.
