Georginio Rutter, The Forward Who Won't Sit Still

Brighton's attacker drifts between the striker role and just behind it, daring defenders to decide who should track him.

Rutter rarely stays where a formation diagram would put him, dropping short to receive the ball between opposition lines before a centre back has decided whether to follow. That movement creates the exact kind of confusion defences hate, because stepping out leaves a gap behind and staying put lets him turn and run at goal instead. He scores from those turns as often as from a simple finish inside the box, arriving late rather than starting there.

The tension is that a forward this fluid can also drift out of games entirely, popping up in pockets of space that never quite connect to a chance. Coaches who love his movement in one match sometimes wonder where he actually was in the next. Whether Brighton settle him into one clear role or keep trusting the roaming version of him is a genuine selection debate.
