Maxim De Cuyper, The Left Back Who Joins In

Brighton's Belgian left back has already scored an international goal from a position most teams treat as purely defensive.

De Cuyper treats the left flank as attacking territory rather than a lane to patrol, timing his overlapping and underlapping runs so a winger ahead of him is never entirely sure which route he will take. That unpredictability creates a genuine two on one out wide far more often than a conventional full back would manage, forcing an opposition defender into a decision he would rather not make. He has carried that instinct into international football too, already on the scoresheet for Belgium from open play.

The obvious tension is what a full back this committed to attacking leaves exposed behind him once possession is lost quickly. Wingers who track back reluctantly can be exposed badly by a full back who has already gambled forward. Whether his positional discipline catches up with his attacking instincts is the balance Brighton need him to strike.
