Kaoru Mitoma, The Winger Who Wins The Turn

Brighton's Japanese winger beats full backs with a change of direction rather than a straight foot race.

Mitoma does not rely on outright speed to beat a defender the way some wingers do. He leans instead on a low centre of gravity and a change of direction that arrives before the full back has planted his feet properly, keeping the ball impossibly close through that shift. Defenders cannot simply commit to a tackle without risking being spun past. Cutting in from the left onto his stronger foot, he is comfortable shooting himself or crossing for a teammate arriving late.

The tension with a dribbler this reliant on one move is that good coaches eventually study it and set a trap, doubling up so the turn has nowhere left to go.
