Costinha, The Right Back Who Just Drives On

Brighton's new full back would rather beat three players with the ball at his feet than pass around them.

Costinha picks the ball up in his own half and instinctively drives with it, forcing the pitch to open up in front of him instead of waiting for a teammate to find space first. That instinct relieves pressure on a Brighton back line that likes to build patiently, because sometimes the quickest way out of trouble is simply to run through it. He adds serious presence in the air as well, winning contests that smaller full backs would not even contest.

The obvious question is what happens when that direct running dries up and he has to solve a problem with his weaker foot instead. He leans heavily on his stronger side, which opposition coaches will eventually notice and set traps around. How Brighton coach that imbalance out of him, without coaching out the raw drive that makes him effective, is worth watching closely.
