Cole Palmer, The Player Who Never Looks Rushed
Palmer plays at a speed of his own choosing, which is what separates him from other attackers who are quicker in a straight line. He receives on the half turn in the right half space, lets the defender guess, then goes either way with a left foot that barely seems to swing. The penalties come from the same place, a refusal to be hurried by anybody, including the goalkeeper.
The interesting tension is that a team built around one player becomes predictable once opponents work out where he wants to stand. Defences now double up on that side and force him further from goal than he would like. Watch how often he appears on the left instead, because that is usually the sign he has decided to go looking for the game.
