Roméo Lavia, The Midfielder Who Escapes Pressure

A Belgian midfielder whose first touch under pressure is the reason teams keep building around him.

Lavia is at his best precisely when a match becomes uncomfortable, receiving with an opponent tight behind him and turning out of trouble as though nothing was happening. He plays the simple pass quickly, then moves to receive it again, which keeps possession circulating when the alternative is a long ball. Midfielders who can be pressed without losing the ball are worth a great deal.

Everything about his career has been complicated by fitness, with muscle problems arriving repeatedly and interrupting every attempt to establish himself. Chelsea have paid a heavy price for a player who has spent large parts of his time unavailable. The football is not in doubt, which is what makes the situation so frustrating for everybody watching him.
