Reggie Watson, The Teenager Who Slows Things Down

An academy midfielder whose composure in possession has already earned him serious attention at Cobham.

Watson plays the position the way experienced midfielders play it, which is the reason first team coaches noticed him so quickly. He receives with his body already open, takes the ball away from the nearest opponent, then moves it on before anybody can force a mistake. Young midfielders normally hurry the pass, and the absence of that hurry is exactly what marks him out.

He is the son of a footballer who spent years in this division, which tends to help with the parts of the game nobody can teach on a training pitch. What remains completely untested is whether the composure holds up against grown men in matches that matter. That answer only arrives through senior minutes, and Chelsea have a great many midfielders standing in front of him.
