Josh Acheampong, The Defender Who Carries It Out

A Cobham graduate whose ball carrying out of defence separates him from every other young defender there.

Acheampong beats the first press by running through it, which is unusual for a defender and genuinely difficult for opponents to plan against. His passing is accurate and consistently forward, and he chooses the angle calmly rather than settling for whichever option arrives first. Watching him take the ball out of his own third, the length of the stride does most of the work.

The area still under construction is the aerial side, since winning headers against a physical centre forward is a specific skill rather than a general one. Premier League football will test that immediately, because opponents look for the weakness in a young defender within twenty minutes. How quickly he solves it decides whether he becomes a centre half or settles at full back instead.
