Moisés Caicedo, The Midfielder Who Wins It Back

An Ecuadorian midfielder whose ball winning lets everybody in front of him take risks safely.

Caicedo defends the whole width of a pitch, which is what allows the players ahead of him to push forward without leaving the team exposed. He reads where the pass is going, gets there first, and turns a defensive action into possession rather than simply a clearance. Midfielders who win the ball cleanly are far more valuable than midfielders who merely stop the attack.

His passing gets criticised by people who want a deep midfielder to dictate everything, which slightly misunderstands the job he is being asked to do. He plays forward when it is on and sideways when it is not, which is generally the correct choice. Watch the ten seconds after Chelsea lose the ball, because that is when his value becomes impossible to miss.

Caicedo plays like a midfielder who wants to own the centre. He presses quickly, snaps into duels, and wins second balls that keep Chelsea on the front foot. In matches where Chelsea are stretched, he becomes the glue, covering spaces others leave behind, slowing counters before they become sprints, and giving the defence protection through pure anticipation and work rate.

What’s improved is his control in possession. He’s more comfortable receiving under pressure, more willing to play forward, and better at choosing when to slow the game and when to accelerate it.
