Enzo Fernández, The Midfielder Who Sets The Tempo

A World Cup winner whose passing decides how quickly or slowly his team plays in any given spell.

Fernández is the player who decides whether an attack goes forward now or in three passes time, which is a bigger responsibility than it sounds. He scans before the ball reaches him, takes it on the back foot, then switches the point of attack to the winger nobody has bothered to track. His late arrivals into the penalty area come from the same reading of the game, arriving a beat after the defenders stop counting bodies.

The long running debate is where he actually belongs, because he has the passing of a deep midfielder and the instincts of an attacking one. Sitting him too deep wastes the runs, pushing him too high wastes the range. Whichever manager solves that properly gets the best version of a footballer who can genuinely do both jobs.
