Liam Delap, The Striker Who Defends From The Front

An English centre forward whose running out of possession matters as much as anything he does with it.

Delap is a nuisance in the best sense, forever moving between the centre half and the full back where nobody wants responsibility for him. He attacks the ball into the corners, holds it up with his back to goal, then spins in behind the moment the defence takes a step forward. The pressing is relentless, and it is the reason he plays even in the weeks when the goals dry up.

The question is finishing, because a striker who works this hard eventually gets judged on what happens when the chance arrives. He arrives in the box regularly enough to suggest the goals will come once his composure catches up with his movement.
