Reece James, The Best Delivery In The Squad

A full back whose right foot creates more danger than most wingers manage in a full season.

James strikes a ball better than almost any defender in the country, whether that is a whipped cross from the touchline, a set piece, or a shot from distance. He also carries it through midfield, which lets a manager use him as a full back one week and something closer to a midfielder the next. Very few players give a team that much flexibility without any drop in quality.

The painful part is availability, because a career interrupted repeatedly by injury has cost him years he will never recover. Every return brings the same question about whether the explosive movement is still there. The captaincy suggests the club believe it is, and his influence on the group hardly depends on him completing ninety minutes every week.
