Robert Sánchez, The Goalkeeper Who Splits Opinion

Chelsea keep picking a goalkeeper whose best work and worst moments both arrive in the same afternoon.

Sánchez is asked to do the job most goalkeepers in this country are never asked to do, which is receive the ball with a forward already closing him down. He takes the touch anyway, waits for the runner to move, then plays the pass that removes the press entirely. Very few keepers his size are that comfortable with the ball under their studs while a striker sprints towards them.

The errors are the reason he remains an argument rather than a settled question, because when one arrives it usually ends up in the net. His supporters point out that a keeper asked to play this way will eventually get caught, which is fair. The judgement worth making is whether the goals he prevents across a full season outweigh the ones he hands to the opposition himself.
