Mamadou Sarr, Calm Before He Should Be

A Senegal defender whose temperament in a Ligue 1 back four surprised people far more than his athleticism.

Sarr came through the Lyon academy and established himself in French football at an age when most defenders are still being protected. What stood out immediately was the absence of panic, the willingness to take the ball under pressure and pass it forward instead of hammering it into the stand. Coaches talk about his temperament before they talk about anything else, which is unusual for a defender that athletic.

Centre half is the position that punishes inexperience most cruelly, because every error becomes a chance for the other team. He has not yet faced a Premier League striker over a long run of matches, which is a genuinely different examination. The ceiling looks high, though the next stage of it depends on how quickly he adapts to being tested every single week.
