Josh Knight, The Defender Who Plays Anywhere

Leicester released him young, so he rebuilt a career through the lower leagues before adding a season in Germany.

Knight can play centre-back, right-back or sit at the base of midfield, and Portsmouth have used him in all three roles depending on the opponent. That range comes from years of being shuffled around on loan spells before Peterborough finally gave him a settled position to build from. A season in Germany with Hannover added something else again, showing him a different rhythm of defending before he returned to English football.

The question with a player this adaptable is whether he ever gets the chance to specialise in one single role for good. Portsmouth signed him on a long contract, which suggests they see him as a genuine option in several roles rather than emergency cover. Whether that flexibility turns into his greatest strength or stops him owning one position for good remains the part worth watching closely.
