A serious ankle injury once threatened his career, yet he still scored Portsmouth's goal that clinched promotion.

Shaughnessy can play as a straightforward centre-back or push into central midfield when needed, a role built from years of proving he offers more than one thing. A bad ankle injury at Leeds United derailed him early, sending him out on loan to Hearts, Mansfield and Burton before he found real form at Rochdale. By the time Portsmouth needed a defender who could arrive in the right place at the right moment, he already had that instinct.
