Terry Devlin, The Defender Who Also Scores

Comfortable at right-back or in central midfield, Devlin adds a goal threat most versatile defenders do not carry.

Devlin made his name at Glentoran before Portsmouth signed him, quickly becoming a first team regular despite arriving outside the usual English pathway. He plays at right-back or pushed into central midfield, trusted on the ball in both roles rather than shuffled around out of need. What sets him apart from a typical utility defender is a habit of arriving late into the box, scoring goals that decide matches rather than tidying up before them.

Becoming a senior international for Northern Ireland while still young at club level shows how fast he has grown. That same versatility raises a fair question about where his long term position really sits. Being useful in two roles is a real strength, but it can also mean never fully owning either one. Portsmouth clearly see enough in him already, having handed him a long new contract regardless.
