Ben Killip, The Long Road Goalkeeper

Killip worked his way up from non-league football through Hartlepool and Barnsley before reaching Championship level.

Killip left Chelsea's academy without a professional deal and spent years rebuilding a career through Norwich City's lower sides and non-league Braintree Town. Hartlepool United finally gave him a settled run of first team football, and that apprenticeship shaped a goalkeeper defined by consistency rather than flashy saves. He helped Hartlepool return to the Football League before moving on to Barnsley and then Portsmouth, standing well over six feet tall.

Joining a club with an established goalkeeper already in the shirt means his role is likely to be competition and cover. That is a familiar position for someone whose whole career has been built on waiting patiently for chances rather than being handed them. Whether he gets a real chance to show what years in the lower leagues taught him is the question that follows him to Fratton Park.
