John Swift, The Midfielder Who Actually Scores

Years of scoring and creating for Reading and West Brom made Swift one of Portsmouth's more proven attacking signings.

Swift came through Chelsea's academy before making his name at Reading, where he combined creating chances with finishing them himself, a rarer skill than it sounds. He carried that habit to West Bromwich Albion, scoring often enough from midfield that opponents had to account for his runs as well as his passing. Born in Portsmouth himself, his arrival felt less like a gamble and more like a proven performer finally coming home.

The question now is whether that output survives inside a Portsmouth side without the platform he had at his old clubs. Goals from midfield often depend on teammates creating space rather than pure individual quality, and Portsmouth cannot yet guarantee that structure every week. Watching whether he still finds the same pockets of space in a different system is the real story of his return.
