Can Pompey pick up where they left off?

Pompey actually finished last season in pretty good nick. Four wins from the final five league games got the job done, including a 3-1 win at Stoke with Adrian Segečić banging in a hat-trick. Not a bad way to sign off.

So the interesting bit now is whether that was just a nice finish or something they can actually take into this year. The first two seasons back were largely about staying in the Championship. At some point, fans are going to want to see what comes after that.

There’s plenty on the calendar too. The south coast derby is back twice, the Championship has six play-off spots this year, and Pompey have a full season to find out whether they can get themselves closer to that conversation.

Nobody needs to start planning for Wembley just yet. But after finishing 18th last time, even getting into spring with something bigger to play for would feel like a decent step forward.

Pompey won it in 1939, beating Wolves 4-1 at Wembley. The competition was then suspended during the Second World War, so Portsmouth remained FA Cup holders until it returned in 1946. Quite a way to extend a trophy reign.
