Nicolas Schmid, The Keeper Who Waited His Turn

Portsmouth's number one spent years waiting as an understudy before a breakthrough turned patience into a permanent starting jersey.

Schmid worked his way up through the Austrian leagues before reaching the top flight, and that grind shaped a goalkeeper who trusts graft over reputation. Portsmouth left him out when he first arrived, so he had to win the shirt back with performances rather than reputation. Since then he has commanded his box with the calm of somebody who already climbed one mountain and expects to climb another.

The tougher test came when he broke his hand in a South Coast derby, yet he still returned to first team duty within a couple of months. That willingness to play through pain says plenty about his character, though it raises the question of how his body copes with a demanding schedule year after year. Whether his distribution and shot stopping keep pace with better strikers than he faced on the way up remains the part worth watching closely.
