Luke Brooke-Smith, The Teenager Already Capped

Already a New Zealand international while still a teenager, Brooke-Smith arrives at Portsmouth as pure potential.

Brooke-Smith broke into Wellington Phoenix's first team as one of the youngest players ever to appear in Australasian football, a mark of real pace and confidence. He can play across the front line as a winger, a forward or through the middle, the kind of flexibility clubs value in a young player. A senior debut for New Zealand followed soon after, an early honour that shows how highly his country already rates him.

Moving from Australasian football into the English Championship is a huge jump for anyone, let alone a player barely out of his teens. Pace and confidence carried him through youth football, but Championship defenders are far more experienced than anything he has faced before. Portsmouth are signing potential rather than a proven product, aware that patience will matter as much as talent here.
