Middlesbrough have reached the play-offs and lost more times than supporters care to count, and there is a weariness around the club that comes from being permanently close without ever getting over the line.

The Riverside on a big night remains one of the better atmospheres in the league, though it does not fill for a wet Tuesday in November, and the difference between those two versions of the ground is often the difference between a good season and an average one. Attacking football and a productive academy give the club a platform most years, and Boro rarely struggle to create chances. Away form is what costs them.

There is a long standing habit of drawing games that should have been won, of dominating possession without scoring and of picking up a point where three were needed, and across 46 fixtures that adds up to the six or seven points that separate second place from sixth.

The squad is usually strong enough. The consistency is not. If Boro are going up, the away column is where it shows first, well before the league table catches up.
