Luke Ayling, The Defender Who Organises Everyone Else

An experienced defender whose real value shows in the constant organising and communication that settles the players around him.

Ayling reads danger early and organises the players around him accordingly, shifting a winger's positioning with a shout or dropping a midfielder deeper before the opposition has even worked the ball into a dangerous area. That communication matters as much as his actual defending. A back four that talks to each other closes gaps a silent one would leave open.

The obvious question with an experienced defender like this is how long his legs keep pace with his football brain, since organisation only covers for so much once recovery pace starts to fade noticeably. Middlesbrough clearly still trust his positioning and leadership enough to keep selecting him regularly across multiple defensive roles, from centre back to full back alike.
