Alfie Jones, A Defender With A Midfielder's Brain

A converted midfielder who now defends, reading passing lanes and stepping in early rather than waiting for danger to arrive.

Jones spent time in midfield before settling into defence, and it shows in how comfortably he receives the ball under pressure. He steps out early to cut off a pass rather than waiting for the danger to develop fully. His positioning owes more to anticipation than to raw pace, reading where the ball is going before the attacker in front of him has actually decided.

The interesting tension is whether that midfield background makes him better suited to playing slightly higher, screening in front of the back four instead of inside it. Some coaches see a converted defender and want him further forward again, using the same reading of the game to break up attacks rather than stop them at source. Watch where he actually lines up whenever Middlesbrough face a tougher away opponent.
