Regan Poole, The Centre-Back Who Rebuilt Himself

A Manchester United academy product who fell out of the spotlight before working back up to Championship football.

Poole arrived at Manchester United as a teenager already carrying a reputation, having broken a decades old record as the youngest player ever fielded by Newport County. That early promise did not translate into first team football, so he spent the following years rebuilding a career through loan spells and permanent moves at Milton Keynes Dons and Lincoln City instead. He captained sides and won awards at that level long before Portsmouth ever came calling.

The tension in his story is obvious, because a player once earmarked for the very top spent his twenties proving himself in leagues most academy graduates never revisit. He can play centre-back or drop into midfield, a versatility that comes from having to fight for a place rather than being guaranteed one. Whether that hard road has made him tougher or simply delayed him is the question Portsmouth fans still get to answer for themselves.
