Nathaniel Chioma, The Academy's Newest Left-Back

A Portsmouth academy graduate given his first taste of regular left-back duty, Chioma has shown flashes of attacking versatility.

Chioma earned a first professional contract after graduating from Portsmouth's academy, and pre-season gave him a real chance to show what that meant. He featured in every pre-season friendly, sharing left-back duties and starting large parts of matches rather than only appearing late on. A brief spell further forward on the left wing hinted at attacking instincts that could offer Portsmouth more than a purely defensive full-back.

Pre-season form against lower level opposition is a long way from proving anything in a real Championship fixture. That gap between the two is exactly what he now has to close. Academy graduates often find the step up to senior football far steeper than a good summer suggests, and he is right at the start of that process. How quickly he adapts to real match tempo will decide whether those pre-season glimpses turn into genuine first team chances.
