Liam Millar, The Winger Who Runs Behind

A Canada international who threatens the space in behind rather than asking for the ball to feet.

Millar came through at Liverpool and the coaches there described him in the same terms every time, a forward who runs down the side of defenders and finishes with either foot. That combination is unusual on a flank, because most wide players want the ball early and want a defender to beat rather than a gap to attack.

A cruciate ligament injury took the best part of a year out of his career, and the frustrating thing about that particular injury is that it attacks exactly what makes him effective. Watch whether he still commits to the first sprint of a move, the one nobody applauds because the pass never comes. A winger who stops making that run has usually stopped trusting the knee.
