Lewie Coyle, The Captain Who Sets Standards

A right back promoted through the divisions with his club, trusted because he never lowers his own standards.

Coyle arrived when the club was in the third tier and has stayed through everything that followed, which explains why the armband sits naturally on his arm. He is not the quickest full back around and he has never pretended otherwise. What he does instead is position himself correctly, stay tight to his winger, and refuse to be dragged out of shape by a clever runner.

The obvious worry is what happens when the wingers get quicker and cleverer, because top flight forwards punish a full back who commits early. Coyle has answered that kind of doubt before by simply doing the job in front of him. He can also fill in across the back line, which keeps him useful even when he is not the first choice on the right.
