Ryan Giles, The Full Back Who Delivers

Few defenders in this country create chances from wide areas as reliably as he does with his left foot.

Giles spent years being loaned around the Championship, and every club he joined discovered the same thing within a month. He gets to the touchline, he gets his head up, and the ball arrives at the height a striker actually wants rather than sailing over everybody. That sounds simple until somebody counts how many full backs put the first cross straight into the nearest defender.

The argument against him has always been the defending, because a left back who lives that high up the pitch leaves a lot of grass behind him. Better wingers will attack that space deliberately and repeatedly. The honest question is whether his delivery creates more than his positioning costs, a calculation every manager who has used him has had to make sooner or later.
