Elliot Stroud, Up And Down The Left Touchline

A Swedish international who covers the whole flank rather than specialising in the attacking half of it.

Stroud came up through the Swedish lower divisions rather than an elite academy, which shows in the way he plays. He won the Swedish title and cup with Mjällby by being the player who does the pressing run, holds the width, then tracks all the way back without needing to be told. One Swedish paper called him a copy of James Milner, and the comparison is not lazy.

The step from Sweden to England is a genuine one, and the World Cup gave a useful preview rather than a complete answer. His position is the first question. A player who can operate as a wing back or as a wide midfielder is enormously convenient for a manager, though it can leave him without a settled home in the team.
