John Egan, The Defender Who Organises Everyone

An Ireland international whose loudest contribution is usually the instruction shouted before the ball is even played.

Egan came through a broken leg early in his career that cost him the best part of a year, and everything since has been built on positioning rather than recovery pace. He defends the box exceptionally well, meeting the cross at the front post, clearing the ball rather than trying to be clever, and constantly moving the players around him into the right places.

He has done this before, which matters more than it sounds. Being promoted with Sheffield United and then defending in the top flight against far better forwards is precisely the education a newly promoted back line needs somewhere inside it. The question is how much of that education he can transmit quickly, because a defence learns those habits from a voice rather than a training ground drill.
