Matt Crooks, A Midfielder Who Arrives Late

A midfielder who has scored at a rate most forwards in the Championship would be perfectly happy with.

Crooks is built like a centre half and finishes like a number nine, a combination that has produced goals at Rotherham, at Middlesbrough and almost everywhere else he has been. His best trick is the timing of the run into the box, arriving after the defenders have already committed to marking somebody else, then getting his head to a cross nobody thought was his.

The step up asks whether that timing survives against defences who track runners properly. Championship sides regularly lose a late arrival in the confusion of a set piece, while top flight centre halves are drilled specifically to prevent it. Watch where he starts his run rather than where he finishes it, because the yard he steals before the delivery is the whole thing.
