Sorba Thomas, The Winger Built On Set Pieces

Years spent outside the professional game shaped a winger whose delivery from dead balls now decides matches on its own.

Thomas whips a cross or free kick into exactly the space a defender cannot reach and a striker can, a skill that distinguishes him from wingers who only offer pace down the line. He earned his move into the Football League on performances that convinced clubs his delivery would translate upward, and it has continued doing so at every level since. Wales noticed the same quality, handing him caps his path through non league football would once have made seem unthinkable.

The question that follows any specialist is whether the rest of his game holds up once opponents specifically plan around stopping his crosses. Defences that press him early can force the ball back inside before he reaches the delivery point that makes him dangerous.
