Svante Ingelsson, The Midfielder Who Arrives Late

A long journey through several European leagues built a composed left footed midfielder who contributes goals as well as graft.

Ingelsson uses his left foot to switch play or slide a pass through a gap a more predictable midfielder would never attempt, changing the angle of an attack in a single touch. He times his runs from midfield well, arriving into the penalty area a beat after defenders have already accounted for the strikers ahead of him. That habit has produced a genuine record of goals and assists, output that sets him apart from midfielders who only protect the back four.

The tension comes from asking a player capable of that creativity to also do the unglamorous defensive running a midfield requires. He has moved through Sweden, Italy and Germany before settling in England, adapting his game at every stop. Watch whether Stoke ask him to sit deeper or push forward, because his best moments have come further up the pitch.
