Sam Gallagher, The Striker Stuck Out Wide

A genuine central striker has spent large stretches of his career deployed wide, a fight that has never fully resolved.

Gallagher holds the ball up with his back to goal and lets a physical battle work to his advantage, using strength rather than movement to buy time for midfield runners arriving late. His most productive spell came leading the line centrally, where a direct supply of crosses and long balls suited exactly what he does best as a recognised target man. Scotland picked him at youth level before he ultimately chose England, a decision shaped partly by personal circumstances.

The tension that has followed him for years is how often managers deploy him on the wing instead, a role that diminishes his aerial threat and asks him to do things further from his strengths. Recurring injuries have not helped him settle into one system long enough to prove which version of himself is more effective.
