Eric Bocat, The Full Back Forged Abroad

Spells in Belgian and French football built a defensively solid left back who rarely looks rushed inside his own box.

Bocat holds his defensive shape well, stepping across a winger's run instead of diving into a challenge he might not win cleanly. That discipline held up during a genuinely hard spell at a Belgian club whose finances collapsed around him, a period that would have exposed a less dependable defender far more obviously. He carried that steadiness into a strong individual year before Stoke signed him, missing barely a match as his side chased a top division return.

The tension is straightforward given he now competes directly with an established left back for the same starting position. He offers more defensive solidity than attacking spark, which suits a manager who wants control of the width rather than end product from it.
