Charlie Hughes, A Defender Who Passes Forward

A young centre back with a passing range good enough that his manager could reasonably play him in midfield.

Hughes was trusted with the Wigan captaincy long before anybody would have blamed him for hiding, and the responsibility clearly suited him. He is comfortable enough on the ball to step out of defence and break a line with a pass, which is rare in a defender still this early in his career. Plenty of centre halves can only find the full back beside them.

The step up will test something different. Premier League forwards press the first pass out of defence far harder, so the window he has been used to will shrink noticeably. Watch whether he keeps playing through that pressure or starts going long, because the moment he stops trusting his range, the whole side sits deeper and the pitch gets very small indeed.
