Lewis Hall, A Midfielder Playing Full Back

His instincts still belong to central midfield, shaping most decisions he makes in the wider defensive role he now occupies.

Hall was developed as a central midfielder before he was ever asked to defend a flank, and that background still governs how he reads the game today. He scans for a forward pass before he checks his shoulder for cover, which gives Newcastle a defender who can step into midfield during build up. He can free a teammate with one simple pass through a crowded middle third rather than going long and losing possession cheaply.

The question is whether that instinct ever gets coached out of him. A converted midfielder sometimes drifts too far infield and leaves the flank open behind him.
