Anthony Elanga, The Winger Built For Transition

Few players carry the ball as far or fast, which is why defenders are told to retreat rather than press.

Elanga is most dangerous the instant possession changes hands, sprinting into space before a defence has had time to reorganise into its usual shape. He would rather run at a retreating back line with the ball at his feet than wait for a pattern to be worked out around him. That directness turns ordinary turnovers into genuine goalscoring chances within a matter of seconds, catching opponents completely unprepared.

His end product has improved as he has learned to pick a final pass rather than simply outrunning everyone in his path. That is the part of his game that took longest to catch up with his legs. Whether he keeps developing that composure decides if he becomes a creator teams fear or just a fast outlet they eventually learn to contain.
