Malick Thiaw, The Centre Back Who Intercepts

He would rather cut out a pass early than chase down a striker once the danger has already become obvious.

Thiaw times his interceptions rather than his tackles, stepping into passing lanes before an attacker even receives the ball. That reading of the game lets him defend from the front instead of chasing back towards his own goal. He breaks up moves early enough that his goalkeeper rarely has to make a save from danger he already prevented before it properly developed into anything serious at all.

He also passes his way out of pressure rather than clearing first and thinking later, which fits a team that wants to build attacks from deep instead of surrendering possession under the first sign of trouble. The trade off comes when his reading is wrong. Stepping early leaves far less margin for error than a defender who simply holds his position and waits.
